e 0
Profile of County of Hawaii's Older Populati
ratio for PSA4 in the 85 and over age group is 75.9 males for every 100 females, which is
slightly higher than the state's ratio of 70.6 males per 100 females in the same age group.
Interestingly, the number of males per 100 females is 97 in rural areas compared to 68
among those living in urban areas of Hawaii County. Although the 85+ age group
represents only 8% of the total older population, service delivery challenges could be
drastically more demanding than those in the younger age groups. Another bulge of the
aging population is also expected to occur in 2011 when a significant number of baby
boomers will reach 65 years of age.
Racial and Ethnic Composition of PSA4 60+ Older Individuals,
2000 Census
The racial and ethnic composition of Big Island's elderly mirrors the diversity of
The Sex ratio
of NO loland'o
older
population
mirrors the
national trend.
the state's population, which is rooted in the development of Racial Distribution
Hawaii's plantation economy and U.S. liberal immigration of PSA4 60+
policy during and after the cold war. Kohala also shows a modest number
(1,162) of white individuals sixty years old and over. The number of older Black/African
American and American Indian/Alaska Native was very insignificant, thus they are
grouped together with other ethnic category in the chart below.
The pie chart below displays the ethnic distribution of PSA4's aging population
Ethnic Distribution
PSA4 60+ Individuals
Korean, Others,
0.56% 14.68% Caucasian,
Chinese, 36.57%
1.27%
Native
Hawaiians,
5.95%
Japanese, Filipino,
30.32% 10.66%
Page -3 -of 11
and depicts that approximately six
out of ten of the Big Island's older
adults are non -Caucasian.
