Profile of County of Hawaii's Older Populate <br />widowed older adults who are either living alone or with minimum social support. <br />Someone's marital status can strongly affect a person's emotional and economic well- <br />being by influencing living arrangements and availability of caregivers. The chart above indicates that two out <br />of three older adults in PSA4 lacks social support as reflected by the total number of 60+ <br />who are either never married, married but spouse absent, widowed and divorced. The <br />same chart shows that the number of female widows is about four times as much as older <br />male widowers. The same data source also found approximately 10% of PSA4s 60+ is <br />foreign born. <br />Poverty Level, Income, Employment and Education <br />During the last ten years, PSA4 showed over a 50% decrease in the number of <br />older individuals 60 years old and over who were living below poverty. The U.S. latest <br />census identified two thousand sixteen older individuals 60+ living below poverty level <br />in 1999 in PSA4 compared to 3,907 in 1989. For unrelated 65+ individuals living alone <br />below poverty, 23.2% are females and 9.2% are males. The State of Hawaii Executive <br />Office on Aging estimates that there are 2,349 low-income minority 60+ PSA4 older <br />individuals in 1999. In addition, the census found that among the 15,844 households <br />receiving Social Security incomes, their mean social security income was $ 11,546. In <br />1999, the mean retirement income for 10,857 households with retirement income was <br />$18,243.
