The median income of male householder <br />65+ living alone ($21,728) is sixty eight percent higher than the median income of female <br />householders 65+ living alone ($12,893). A closer look of the same data indicates <br />greatest gender -income disparity in the South Kohala district where the median income of <br />male householders 65+ living alone is $69,318 compared to the median income of female <br />householders 65+ living alone which is $17,188. While the HCOA Senior Citizen <br />Information System shows high number of those in the database has annual income of <br />less than $15,000, the US Census 2000 SF3 indicates that approximately 12% of 60+ <br />householders have incomes less than $10,000 annually. <br />Toward Healthy Hawaii 2010, published in December 2002 by the State of <br />Hawaii Department of Health stated that the median household income for Hawaii <br />County was nearly $10,000 lower than the State of Hawaii and United State's household <br />median income. <br />Employment Status of PSA4 Older <br />Individuals 60+, U.S. Census 2000 <br />The US Census 2000 Summary File 3(SF3) estimates <br />that one in five (21%) of PSA4's 60+ are employed, a great <br />majority (78%) was not in the labor force and the rest are <br />unemployed. Possible explanation to the decrease in number <br />of older adults living in poverty could be the gradual <br />emergence of a more educated aging population in Hawaii <br />County. In 2000, it was estimated that 64.6% older <br />individuals have high school education or higher and 15.6% <br />possess a bachelor's degree or higher.
