N
.L _
-L
73-4325 Keokeo Stl'eet ~
Kailua-Kona, HI.~6740 w
March 22, 2004 ~n

Councilman James Arakaki

25 Aupuni Street

Hilo, Hawaii 96720
Sir:
I live on Keokeo Street in the Kona Palisades azea and am very concerned about our
traffic problems, not only in the Palisades azea, but also in the greater Kadua-Kona azea.
At times I have had to wait in three blocks of traffic in order to get from Kaiminani Drive
onto the Mamalahoa Highway. I know from my own experience as a Hertz employee
that rental caz agencies, when returning people to a cruise ship in the afternoon, will drive
up Hina Lani or Kaiminani Drive to get customers back to their ship on time. Also, I
learned at a recent meeting of the house that burned to the ground in the lower Kona
Highlands or Wonderview azea because the fire truck had to go up to Mamalahoa and
then back down to the house. This could have been prevented if Holoholo Street or some
lower street had been open to that area.
We need relief. It was reported at this meeting that opening Holoholo Street has been
recommended several times as a remedy in getting access to the north of Kona Palisades.
We need streets opened up so those north of us could get access into the greater Kadua-
Kona azea without going to Mamalahoa or Highway 19.
The people who live above Honokohau would be trapped in an emergency situation.
Couldn't Kealakehe be opened up to Pal:uri and a route, including Holoholo, connect the
azea north of us to Kealakehe? Opening up Keokeo Street is not a good solution because
of very poor visibility at Kaiminani Drive and a narrow and dangerous turn at the
intersection of Holu and Ahi7cawa. Keokeo Street is also too faz from the fire station.
Thank you for yoar attention to this matter.
Sincerely,
Lee W. Shrock
Comm. No. ~7" Q
Ref.
