Your June
agenda includes consideration of a Revised Sign Code, which Councilman Curtis Tyler and you
have proposed.
The new revised Sign Code is swell-written document, which has been carefully researched to
insure that it overcomes the weaknesses inherent in the present code. It provides an instrument
that offers a strong, swift, and enforceable response to illegal signs.
The history of illegal signs in West Hawaii is legendary. For years, and despite major efforts in
educating the business community on legal signs and how to display them, the provisions of the
existing sign code are repeatedly violated. The present sign code does not allow swift penalties
for illegal signs. In fact, enforcement is a long, tedious and ineffectual process. Therefore,
violations are often willful, blatant and make a total mockery of the law. Illegal signs are blight
and a reflection of a sign code that doesn't work.
Kona Outdoor Circle's mission is to keep Kona clean, green, and beautiful. Illegal signs certainly
are contrary to that mission. Far the sake of residents and visitors alike we are counting on you
to endorse the Revised Sign Code and refer it to the County Council far ratification.
Mahalo for your consideration.
Alot~,
a,
Anne Irene Wilcox
President
Kona Outdoor Circle
Gaorem.
