U.S. Congressional District Member's Name: Ed Case <br />5. Project Title: Old Volcano Trail Planning & Design <br />6. Project Location: <br />Termini on Route 11, and parallel to Route 11. Trail length of 19.8 miles, from Keaau to <br />Hawaii Volcanoes National Park; Districts of Puna and Kau, County of Hawaii <br />7. Proposed Work: <br />Planning and Design of the Old Volcano Trail, for tourism and recreational travel <br />accessing Hawaii Volcanoes National Park (HVNP). Planning and design to include (1) <br />metes and bounds survey of trail traverse and (2) development of trail design and <br />construction plan. <br />Metes and Bounds Survey to entail location of survey pins placed along the Old Volcano <br />Trail, relocation of disturbed pins, and generation of a licensed survey report. Report will <br />confirm traverse of the historical trail and the prospective trail corridor. <br />Design and Construction Plan to entail specifications for installation of a natural tread for <br />pedestrian and bicycle transportation along trail corridor. Plan will also entail <br />specifications for adjacent vehicular parking areas. <br />Phase II of proposed project entails construction of paved shared use bicycle path <br />Public Lands Category: Hawaii Volcanoes National Park (HVNP) <br />Project Purpose & Benefits: <br />Project addresses resource management needs related to expanded access to Hawaii <br />Volcanoes National Park (HVNP), including safer recreational transportation. <br />The Old Volcano Trail is the historic route used to access the attractions at HVNP over a <br />hundred years prior to creation of the Park. The Trail will provide safe access to the Park <br />for pedestrians and bicycles as a non -vehicular corridor to the Park entrance. The Trail <br />connects the residential areas of Keaau and Hilo with the Park, thus providing <br />recreational transportation between popular tourism attractions and the Park. The Trail <br />will enhance the Ala Kahakai National Historic Trail by linking with its terminus at the <br />
