The Humane Society was supposed to come to Waikoloa on Friday (January 28th) to speak to the dog's
owners. I called them after 3:00 PM because I had not heard anything from them. The woman on the phone
told me that they just got really busy up in Kohala and didn't make it to Waikoloa. I guess they had not
intended on calling me back? This is not acceptable to me! She asked if I wanted to speak to her manager.
I said yes please... The manager got on the phone and told me the same thing; they were too busy and had
so many calls for Kohala that they couldn't make it to Waikoloa. (I don't understand this attitude; they were
really trying to convince me that I should feel sorry for them for having a busy day?) She said they would
come out next Tuesday (February 1 st). I said, "What is happening with these dogs in the mean time!" She
said they called a neighbor and the dogs are in the yard. (Note: They still have not contacted the Owners) I
told her I was going to file a police report in addition to the Humane Society report. She said I should do
that. The Police will take care of the issue and give the owner a "Dangerous Dog" citation. She also asked
me why I didn't call the Humane Society sooner (as if this hold up was my fault!). I told her because I didn't
even know my cat was dead until late Tuesday and I've been gathering evidence to make sure 1 knew who
the dogs belonged to! I was doing HER job so they didn't blow me off and say they would do a "sweep of
the neighborhood" like they did for the Sperlings. Then, she asked me if I had proof I said yes, 1 have
pictures and I have a witness that saw them do it. After we hung up she called me back and warned me that
if the Police issued a Dangerous Dog citation the Humane Society would not be able to remove the dog
from the yard because the fate of the dogs would be on the court. I still don't understand how this is
important because I asked her directly and she told me they would not be able to remove the dogs anyway,

just issue a citation. I really felt like I got "attitude" from the Humane Society and they were trying to scare
me out of going to court. I moved forward with my Police Complaint.
I called the police and they quickly contacted an officer to call me back. I told him about my frustration
with dealing with the Humane Society. He said the Humane Society is understaffed but they are the correct
people to contact to handle this issue. He was very sympathetic about the incident and the loss of my kitty
(finally some sympathy!). He documented my call "for the record". By the time I got off the phone with
the police, the Humane Society was closed. I'm not even sure now if they are going to come to Waikoloa on
Tuesday (because they think the police are taking care of it). I'm going to call the Humane Society again on
Tuesday.
On .Tanuary 28th I went to the Waikoloa Village Association office and they said they couldn't do anything
about this. 'T'hey said to file a police report. They did however give me a preview copy of the February
Waikoloa Breeze. The Letter To The Editor is a similar story! Two dogs attacked the cat in it's own
backyard. I contacted the people who wrote the letter and sent them a picture of the dogs. She called me
back and said her witness said although the dogs fit the description (I think too similar to be a coincidence)
she would have to see the dogs in person to be sure. She said the dogs looked bigger in the picture.
So here we are, early Saturday morning a week after the incident and the owners have yet to been
contacted. No wonder people give up or take matters into their own hands. I'm totally exhausted dealing
with this issue and I just want to mourn my kitty and put it behind me.
I saw another missing cat flyer for a cat on Lina Poe Poe Street. If my neighbor had not told me what
happened to my cat he would havejust been "missing" too. Maybe I would have been better off not
knowing what happened...
The Waikoloa Village Homeowner's Association won't do anything except tell you to file a Police Report.
The Humane Society is "under staffed" and does not have time to do anything.
The Police Department puts the responsibility back on the Humane Society.
We will soon be moving to Hawaiian Paradise Park in Keaau. People tell me that HPP has packs of wild
dogs. Okay, I'll deal with that, at least it's a remote area and I know how to trap cats and dogs! Who would
have imagined that Waikoloa Village has dangerous dogs running wild terrorizing neighborhoods? Why do
we have CC&R's? What about the Leash Law?
