MADD - Hawaii <br /> Nawai'1 Partnership to Prevent Underage Drinking <br /> The Hawaii County Project PAU Council (PAU Council) expresses our gratitude to the <br /> Office of Juvenile Justice and Delinquency Prevention, the State of Hawaii Department <br /> of Health-Alcohol, Drug and Abuse Division and MADD-Hawaii for appropriating funding <br /> for community and youth programs on the Island of Hawaii (Big Island). <br /> The County and Island of Hawaii has a population of 150,000 with a landmass of <br /> approximately 4000 square miles. It is the largest of the eight main islands of the State <br /> of Hawaii. The majority of its population reside in two distinct communities in the <br /> geographic areas known as Hilo (East Hawaii) and Kona (West Hawai'i). <br /> In 2000, astate-wide high school survey, conducted by the State of Hawaii Department <br /> of Health-Alcohol and Drug Abuse Division, indicated that on the Big Island 35% of 6tH <br /> graders, 76°r6of 10"' graders and 90°r6 of 12tH graders reported using alcohol resulting in <br /> the highest usage of alcohol by minors in the state. <br /> In response to these disturbing results and equally disappointing results from <br /> compliance checks and enforcement efforts on state and county lands, the PAU Council <br /> was formed in 2000 to provide amulti-agency task force committed to enforcement and <br /> education relating to liquor laws.
