Hawaii County Project PAU Advisory Council <br /> <br /> A Program to Prevent Alcohol Use by Minors <br /> of underage drinking and access to liquor by minors and actively supports community <br /> and youth programs, which promote drug and alcohol free activities. The PAU Council's <br /> current members include the State of Hawaii Department of Health -Public Health <br /> Nursing-Hilo Branch; Hawaii County Police Department Community Policing Division; <br /> State of Hawaii Department of Land and Natural Resources-Division of Conservation <br /> and Resources Enforcement and the Hawaii County Department of Liquor Control <br /> <br /> whose Director serves as the PAU Council's chairperson. <br /> The PAU Council is pleased to report that we were able to provide funding assistance to <br /> twelve youth and community projects throughout the Big Island, as herein described. <br /> 1. Ke Anuenue AHEC, Inc. is anon-profit agency in Hilo, Hawaii. Its youth project <br /> was a pool party dedicated to approximately 100 high-risk teens. The Salvation <br /> Army Teen Court and the Big Island Substance Abuse Council bussed teens <br /> from Kona, Kau, Puna and Hamakua to join Hilo teens for this pool party for <br /> swimming, games, music and to hear messages which advocated drug free <br /> lifestyles. The group also heard messages from members of the Waianae <br /> Seariders Productions, a Honolulu group, which does statewide promotions <br /> against substance abuse. Funds were used for food, entertainment and <br /> supplies. <br /> 2. The Hamakua Drug Free Committee hosted 144 youths from Kalanianaole, <br /> Laupahoehoe, Paauilo and Honoka'a schools at an event to promote leadership <br /> skills and youth relations among youths on the Hamakua coast. Guest speakers <br /> encouraged drug and alcohol-free lifestyles and about making the right choices in <br /> life. <br /> 3. ZAP'EM, (Zero Alcohol Providers) was a project of two University of Hawaii-Hilo <br /> Baccalaureate Nursing students to inform the public of the social host liability law <br /> passed in 2003. They presented ZAP'em to the UH School of Nursing, a TV spot <br /> with Mayor Harry Kim and Officer Michael Riviera on "Living in Paradise" which <br /> aired throughout the County during the month of June, 2004; Ke Anuenue VCC <br /> system media presentation that reached communities such as Ka'u and Kamuela <br /> and the islands of Molokai and Majuro; and island-wide radio spots for the month <br /> of June. Funds were used for radio advertising and purchase of promotional <br /> items that were used for educational presentations. <br /> 4. The 3`d Annual Summer Surf Session is an island-wide surf contest for teens. <br /> This popular event held in West Hawaii hosts approximately 100 contestants <br /> with upwards of 500 persons in attendance.
