Beginning on the 35`h anniversary of Earth Day, in cooperation with the County's Department of Environmental Management, we will be offering a free Earth Machine to all Hawaii Island schools. Made from recycled plastic, the Earth Machine is a specially designed bin for turning greenwaste into compost. It is compact and completely enclosed preventing excess moisture and pests from entering the compost. As used by the average household to compost greenwaste and food scraps, nearly ] 0 tons of waste maybe diverted from landfills over the 10-year estimated life of the Earth Machine. Schools that accept this offer will have the means to impart to their students an interesting environmental science project while turning cafeteria kitchen scraps and grcenwaste clippings into a valuable landscaping resource that will benefit their campus soil and bcautitication projects.
