Below is a link to our Department website. The Environmental Impact <br /> Statement for the Sort Station (Feb 2004) and the Update to the Integrated Solid Waste Management Plan <br /> (December 2002) are both on the site. <br /> A few pieces of information that may shed some light <br /> I have asked the State Legislature to require the big box stores to partner with the County for back-hauling of <br /> recyclables, since it is widely believed their containers go back rather empty. So far. the Legislature decided it <br /> was worth studying, and I haven't found the study yet. <br /> As for the $14.5 Million Sort Station. It is many things, including a residential recycling center and <br /> including commercial recycling processing areas. The first phase is estimated at around $7 Million. Along with the <br /> basic infrastucture of utilities, roads. a scale house, scales, and the replacement of the chutes for the Hllo <br /> Transfer Station, there will be areas for: <br /> Fats, Oils, and Greases (FOGs), <br /> Scrap metal recycling, <br /> Greenwaste mulching and composting, <br /> Abandoned vehicles impound yard, <br /> A small prototype Bottle Bill Redemption building (using solar power, water catchment, and natural ventilation) <br /> that will work at our rural transfer stations around the island as needed. <br /> The second phase includes <br /> Reuse center, <br /> Education area, <br /> Remediation of the old open dump sites in the area. <br /> The third phase includes <br /> Construction and Demolition recovery yard <br /> and whatever still needs work from the first two phases OR <br /> More remediation <br /> It is a large area which has been treated badly for many years.
