Community activities are centered at the Community Activity Building and
Office at 17th Street at Makuu.
A volunteer Board of Directors oversees the activities of this community. To better inform the
community, a free standing sign was erected on Hui Hanalike's property facing Makuu Drive.
(See the attached drawing for sign dimensions.) Community notices and other information are
posted on this bulletin board. The board thus serves as a means to inform the members of the
community and in particulaz inform the working members of the community who may not

otherwise be informed of vital community information. Because many of our neighbors pass by

the sign when it is dark we felt it important to illuminate the sign.

Although we were earlier informed that we did not need a permit for this bulletin board, when

we sought permission to install a light upon the sign we were then told that a permit was
required. We were subsequently also informed that a permit for the board would not be granted

to us because it exceeded the 8 square feet allowed.
Consequently, we request at this time, the Council's assistance in granting a variance to allow
our sign/bulletin board which is approximately 42 inches high and 54 inches long.
Because we relied upon the Building Department's assurance that we did not require a permit
when we installed the sign, to require us to reduce the sign's size at this time would be difficult
if not impossible. The bulletin board is faced with a Texan plastic sheet which is bullet proof and
which was specially imported from the mainland for this purpose. The frame is constructed out
of welded angle irons. To reduce the size of the boazd would require us to destroy it and start
over at significant cost. Further, a board size of 8 squaze feet would be inadequate to
accommodate all of the information presently posted on the boazd. The board is fully loaded
with notices at its present size. cb~. Ya_~ ySG
A'!~ ;tn. ASV
k".ef, ihate 1_
