~tv os y-_ <br /> COUNTY OF HAWAII STATE OF HAWAII <br /> ••ry~oi'M~'~~ <br /> RESOLUTION NO. 469 ~6 <br /> <br /> A RESOLUTION IN SUPPORT OF THE ESTABLISHMENT OF A VOLUNTEER FIRE <br /> STATION WITHIN KA`OHE HOMESTEADS BY THE KA`OHE HOMESTEADS <br /> <br /> COMMUNITY AND FARM WATCH <br /> WHEREAS, Ka`ohe Homesteads is home to several hundred people, mostly low <br /> income, disabled and senior citizens living on more than 67 agricultural lots; and <br /> WHEREAS, during times of drought, the Puna region has historically had risks of range <br /> fires, such as occurred in 1984 and 1989; and <br /> WHEREAS, the Wao Kele `O Puna forest reserve, which abuts Ka`ohe Homesteads, <br /> <br /> poses a risk of forest fires affecting residents in the azea; and <br /> WHEREAS, Ka`ohe Homesteads is a cul-de-sac community, serviced by the Ka`ohe <br /> Homestead Road and without modern infrastructure such as running water, electricity, telephone <br /> <br /> or wireless service, and the residents are in danger should a range fire cut off egress through <br /> <br /> Ka`ohe Homestead Road; and <br /> WHEREAS, a volunteer fire station within Ka`ohe Homesteads will assist homeowners <br /> <br /> with fighting range and residential fires and with obtaining fire insurance for their property; and <br /> WHEREAS, the Ka`ohe Homesteads Community and Farm Watch has filed with the <br /> State of Hawaii as a Domestic Nonprofit Corporation and with the federal government as a <br /> 501(c)(3) nonprofit and is a legal entity able to negotiate for its community; and <br /> WHEREAS, the Ka`ohe Homesteads Community and Farm Watch has the necessary <br /> manpower to staff a volunteer fire station and is currently in negotiation with the Catholic <br /> Diocese of Honolulu fora 15 acre site; and <br /> WHEREAS, the Ka`ohe Homesteads Community and Farm Watch is willing to commit <br /> land, facilities and manpower to establish a volunteer fire station within Ka`ohe Homesteads. <br /> NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE COUNCIL OF THE COUNTY <br /> OF HAWAII, that the Hawaii County Fire Department support the establishment of a <br /> volunteer fire station within Ka`ohe Homesteads which will provide fire fighting and educational <br /> resources for the future benefit of residents in Ka`ohe Homesteads. <br /> <br />
