November 14, 2006

Testimony in Support of Resolutions 498, 499, 508, 525

Dear Chairman Higa and Members of the Hawaii County Council:

I wish to express my strong support for Resolutions 498, 499, 508, and 525, which would
help fund the replacement of obsolete and nonrepairable equipment at the Big Island's
only public shooting facility, the County Trap and Skeet Range.

Upgraded only minimally, this facility can provide a supervised and structured
opportunity for persons of all gender, age, and physical abilities to learn and practice
shotgun firearms skills. While skilled sports in their own right, trap and skeet also
provide hunters with shooting practice, on the island that just a few years back accounted
for some 12,000 of the 16,000 game birds reported harvested statewide. In addition,
some areas on the Big Island provide some of the most diverse populations of game birds
found anywhere in the United States, with some species which are found nowhere else in
the United States.

Most of the labor and materials to try to maintain this facility have been private voluntary
donations. However, the cost of replacing the aged and deteriorating trap machines is
simply beyond the capacity of volunteer groups and individuals to bear, and as actions
directly in the public interest, this minimal County support is urgently needed.

Please support these resolutions that will keep our only currently existing public shooting
facility up and running.

Sincerely,

Ed Johnson, Papa Bay, Big Island
