The new zoo position will be the key to providing stability for these programs and an

anchor for our volunteers. Volunteers come and go, but more will stay if there is a
contact person available to direct them and work with them.
Of course, the Friends of the Zoo will be happy to work with the person in this new
position, and we will carry on our activities at the zoo and benefit from having afull-time
staff member to work with and relieve some of the burden as well as help recruit and
maintain volunteers. We do have a very dedicated core of volunteers, and we do not
want them to bum out. Last year they logged 5,556 hours of service. At $18.77 per
hour (provided by NANO -Hawaii Assoc. of Nonprofit Organizations) their volunteer
time would be worth over $104,000. Also, 5,556 hours is almost 3 full-time positions!
(40hr/wk X 50 weeks = 2,000 hrs.)
Attachments: FOZ Annual Report and Financial Report 2005-2006
FOZ Officers and Directors
Letter ftom a recent zoo visitor
cc: Harry Kim, Mayor, Hawaii County
Pat Engelhard, Director, Department of Parks & Recreation
Pam Mizuno, Deputy Director, Department of Parks & Recreation
George Saito, Zoo Director
