rr~
October 3, 2007 ~ ~ ~ ~ ~
County Council of Hawaii
Donald Ikeda, Representative
We, the Piihonua Houselots Community Association, would like to convey our support to

you and the resolution that you will present before the Council concerning improvements

made to Gilbert Carvalho Pazk.
As residents of this azea, we drive past this Park every day and we have used the facilities
often for community events. We have noticed, to our dismay, a very dangerous situation
where cazs and trucks park on the shoulder of Waianuenue Avenue while tailgating and
watching the games being played in the field. Children wander behind the vehicles and
cars are passing by, blinded by afternoon sun and not always watching for pedestrians at
this point. In addition to this already hazardous scene, there is an odd yield sign posted to
this flow of traffic to allow incoming cazs feeding from Kaumana Avenue. Cazs aze
expected to slow down to allow for traffic feeding from their left. In essence, a driver has
to look to the left to see if there is an incoming caz, and at the same time look to the right
to watch for a stray child or adult who is too neaz the edge of the shoulder. What about
watching the caz in front, too?
We have written numerous letters to the Public Works Dept. to change the Yield sign,
and we have written numerous letters to the Parks and Recreation Dept. We are serious
about seeing change at this location. We cannot abide the thought that someone may be
seriously injured or killed and a tragedy could have been prevented.
Your resolution encompasses improvements to the pazking azea, and we feel confident
that if sufficient pazking is provided for park users that pazking on the shoulder would
cease. We would like to see Gilbert Carvalho Pazk improved in many ways, and the key
to this Park being well served is that there is adequate and properly located pazking.
Thank you for your concern for our neighborhood.
Sincerely,
~
Maile Walsh, Secretary
Piihonua Houselots Community Association
