<br /> October 2, 2007 <br /> Dear Councilman Ikeda, U ~ <br /> I was very interested in your proposal to upgrade Carvalho Park. Far <br /> decades the whole county has used this park literally to pieces. It <br /> serves the greater Hilo area and hosts teams from around the island <br /> almost weekly for sporting events. The ball field and gym are almost <br /> used daily. From our keiki to our seniors; for softball, volleyball, <br /> basketball -leagues and tournaments; for fundraisers, social events - <br /> the Portuguese Culture Club's annual festival; baby and graduation <br /> parties and for just playing in the playground, we have all grown up <br /> around and gathered here for a lot of the important events in our lives. <br /> I live close by and have grown up playing at the park and most <br /> recently with the Hui Na Kolohe softball team. Some of us have tried <br /> proposing upgrades over the years but have always been told "not <br /> enough money". The gym is in serious need of repair/renovation. The <br /> pavilion needs upgrading/renovation, repair, additional restrooms, a <br /> larger, more cost effective and efficient kitchen, and, given the Hilo <br /> rain, maybe additional square footage for sheltering. <br /> A clubhouse was proposed a few years back and that might be good <br /> too. <br /> Adequate and safer parking is also sorely needed. This would help the <br /> public safety issue in reducing crime and promote better pedestrian <br /> safety in the overcrowded lot. More parking space would also <br /> eliminate the need to park on Waianuenue, again for safety issues. <br /> Carvalho Park has helped make great memories for the thousands of <br /> us who have used it.
