FACILITATION OF IMPAIRED DRIVING TASK FORCE <br /> CONTINUED WORKING ON GOALS ESTABLISHED BY THE TASK FORCE <br /> THROUGH THE DEVELOPMENT, PROMOTION AND IMPLEMENTATION OF <br /> EFFECTIVE EDUCATION AND ENFORCEMENT PROGRAMS AND POLICIES TO <br /> REDUCE IMPAIRED DRIVING IN HAWAII COUNTY. <br /> To reach the goals of the task force, subcommittees were formed and meetings were <br /> held throughout the year: Criminal Justice subcommittee (4 meetings conducted), <br /> Safe Ride Subcommittee (4 meetings conducted) in addition to the impaired driving <br /> task force meeting. <br /> ? REDUCE NUMBER OF IMPAIRED DRIVING FATALITIES BY 10% <br /> During this grant period, there were a total of 35 fatalities; 12 involved alcohol, 8 <br /> involved drugs, 5 fatalities involved both drugs and alcohol. 18 of the fatalities <br /> were free of any substances.* statistics as of 10/19/07; test results of recent <br /> fatality cases still pending. 51% of fatalities involved alcohol and/or drugs <br /> During last grant period, there were a total of 37 fatalities; 13 alcohol related; 11 <br /> involved drugs; 4 involved both alcohol and other drugs. 15 fatalities were free of <br /> any substances. 59.5% of the fatalities involved alcohol and/or drugs. <br /> There has been a 8.5% decrease since last grant period. <br /> ? INCREASE NUMBER OF DUI ARRESTS <br /> During this grant period, there was a total of 1251 DUI arrests in Hawaii county <br /> compared to 1127 during the same period last year, an increase of 11 % . <br /> ? INCREASE NUMBER OF DUI CONVICTIONS <br /> A Criminal Justice subcommittee was formed as a result of the task force's goals. <br /> This subcommittee consisted of members from the prosecutor's office, court <br /> monitoring project and police to formulate ways to improve processing of DUI <br /> cases. <br /> Results from Court Monitoring Project still pending review and evaluation from <br /> task force. <br /> <br />
