Yagong, Dominic

From: William George [captainbill@hawaiiantel.net] RE('` I f LL)
Sent: Thursday, May 10, 2007 8:02 AM
To: Dominic Yagong
'~~p~e8 2 SS
Subject: Acquisition of land for the Honokaa Rodeo AYE
Dear Councilman Yagong, COU l
As you are aware, the facility in Honokaa is heavily used by those interested in the
Paniolo tradition and the use of horses in ranch activity and competition. This is clean,
healthy, non polluting family activity and is enthusiastically enjoyed by residents of the
Big Island.
Users include the Hawaii Saddle Club, roping organizations, the Hawaii Quarter Horse
Association, therapeutic horsemanship (GABBI), the Hawaii Island Cutting Horse Association
and individuals who take their horses to the arena to train and practice.
In recent years the development of home sites adjacent to the arena grounds has meant that
there is no longer an adequate area to work and warm up the horses prior to entering the
arena itself for competition.
Riders must therefore work their animals in close proximity to adults and small children
on foot. Safety is of course compromised when riders attempt to maneuver a thousand pound
animal in close proximity to people. Parking for horse trailers is also restricted.
I understand that an adjacent parcel of five acres may be coming up for sale and I
encourage you to persue the acquisition of this property by the county. Perhaps this may
be accomplished by purchase or exchange. This additional area will enhance the safety and
utility of this facility.
Mahalo,

William George
Honokaa
775-9376

Comm.
