February 5, 2008

To Whom It May Concern:

Aloha,
My name is Pua Case and I am the `Ike Hawai'i Resource
Teacher at Waimea Public Conversion Charter School which in
essence means that I am responsible for implementing formal
Hawaiian Culturally related professional development,
events, programs and student involved activities at the
school.

I am writing to support the Island wide School Garden
Network which advocates for over 30 school gardens on our
island including Mala'ai, Waimea Middle School's Culinary
Garden on our campus.

Mala'ai has become the one essential component of the
`Ike Hawai'i Program in that it provides experiential,
hands on place and culture based content and learning
lessons for students throughout sixth to eighth grade.
Here, Hawaiian values become universal application of
stewardship and sustainability providing the students with
opportunities to take what they learn in their classrooms
and apply it directly in the appropriate learning setting.
Truly, they are able to visualize and internalize such work
ethic related values and practices as , "Ma ke hana, ka
like," the Hawaiian Proverb which means "By doing, one
learns." Here, too. they are introduced to cultural
practitioners and community resources who are everyday
stewards with passion for the land and the products it
yields. From them, the students confirm the importance of
learning the skills needed for self sufficiency on so many
levels.

Therefore, I ask you to please support the School
Garden Network and the invaluable work they are doing for
the students, teachers and island communities.

Mahalo,
Pua Case
