Murashige, Laura

From: Matilda Tompson [TompsonP001 @hawaii.rr.com]
Sent: Monday, February 04, 2008 9:38 PM
To: counciltestimony@co.hawaii.hi.us
Subject: Funding for the School Garden Network
Aloha Councilmen and Councilwomen,

I am writing in support of the Resolution 506-08 known as the School Garden Project,
introduced by Councilman Angel Pilago from North Kona. I would urge each of you to
support this resolution and to find funding to support the project. There is a growing
grassroots initiative to move learning in the garden into our schools. These programs are
creating hands-on living laboratories for the students to deepen their understanding of
the sciences and nutrition, tying in social studies, language arts, and math and Hawaiian
culture into meaningful activities in an outdoor setting. Having recently joined the
program at Waimea Middle School, I am seeing the positive effect the garden is having on a
number of the students. I would like to see all students on our island have the
opportunity to experience the growing of food they can eat, and all the attendant learning
that is available in the garden.
Thank you for your consideration and support,
Matilda Tompson
Executive Director
Mala'ai: The Culinary Garden
of Waimea Middle School
808-885-9206

ti

m
Cn e.

CD rr(
i
\ C1'1
Co

Comm.
