<br /> <br /> <br /> Agency Mission Statement: <br /> <br /> <br /> To tell the story of Hawaii, its islands and its people. <br /> <br /> It exists to: <br /> Collect, preserve, and exhibit artifacts, artwork, and memorabilia relating <br /> to the culture, art, and historical heritage of Hawai'i. <br /> Educate and encourage awareness in these areas through visually <br /> exciting as well as interpretive exhibitions, informative tours, special programs, <br /> and activities. <br /> <br /> Serve as a learning - resource center for those seeking information, <br /> entertainment, and knowledge. <br /> <br /> Fully extend itself to the public in order to instill community pride and <br /> support. <br /> <br /> Maintain a standard of excellence and professionalism, seeking to <br /> improve, progress, and realize our full potential as a Museum. <br /> <br /> The Lyman Mission House and Museum, founded in 1931, consists of the <br /> Lyman family home, first built in 1839, and a modern Museum building <br /> constructed in 1973. <br /> <br /> The restored Lyman Mission House is furnished to depict missionary life in <br /> the period 1840 to 1880. It is a reminder of a band of devoted men and women <br /> who dedicated their lives to bringing their Christian faith to the people of these <br /> islands and whose presence here exerted a profound effect on the development <br /> of these island communities. <br /> <br /> The adjacent modern Museum building houses exhibits and presents <br /> programs and activities designed to interpret the physical environment and <br /> ecology of the islands as well as the rich and varied ethnic heritage of our island <br /> people, that there may be a deeper understanding and appreciation of the on- <br /> going human process here in the fiftieth state in the heart of the Pacific Basin. <br /> <br /> The historical, cultural and contemporary artifacts are presented in the <br /> following manner: <br /> <br /> 1. Hawaiian life prior and subsequent to European discovery. <br /> 2. The Missionary period of 1840 -1880. <br /> 3. The traditional life styles of Hawai'i's major immigrant groups. <br /> 4. The natural history of Hawai'i, including its volcanos, flora and <br /> fauna. <br /> 5.
