DUTIES OF THE POSITION <br /> List each duty assigned to the position separately. Diagnoses and repairs engine and other mechanical failures for construction equipment, heavy vehicles, truck tractors, refuse <br /> trailers, landfill equipment, stationary and mobile compaction refuse units and some automotive equipment. Repairs and <br /> overhauls small to heavy sized motors, equal or greater sized to International 140 mowers and other construction equipment <br /> such as 2-3 ton rollers, portable sprayers, 105 to 150 cfm air compressors and air cooled engines, etc. Repairs various <br /> systems including brake, hydraulic, electrical, charging, starting, ignition, emission and exhaust gas recirculation, electronic <br /> engine control, etc. Diagnoses motor knocks and noises. Inspects, removes, repairs or overhauls and replaces major units <br /> including transmissions, steering units, differentials, front and rear axles, hydraulic pumps and cylinders, etc. Removes, <br /> repairs and replaces various work or damaged parts such as motor mounts, fuel pumps and lines, hydraulic hoses, wheel <br /> bearings, oil seals, valve tappets and rocker arms, cylinder heads, gaskets, etc. Fabricates and installs required safety <br /> features or modifies equipment to safety standards as needed. Lubricates and services vehicles and equipment as assigned. <br /> Inspects replacement parts and submits requests for supplies, parts and materials needed in making repairs. Reviews work <br /> upon completion. Inspects and makes required adjustments and road tests all equipment. Performs safetyinspections on <br /> vehicles and light trucks and performs PUC (D.O.T. to Dept. of Transportation) inspections on heavy vehicles, refuse trailers, <br /> lowbeds, stationary compacting units and other necessary equipment. Performs welding work in connection with repair work. <br /> Responsible for maintaining records and inventory of materials, tools, supplies and equipment assigned to employee. Uses <br /> tools and equipment such as head light testers, toe-in-tae-out gauges, scan tool testers, torque wrenches, arc and gas welding 80% <br /> tools, hydraulic power presses, automotive and heavy equipment repair tools, etc. (1, 2, 3) <br /> 2. Reviews and signs leave requests, accident claims and other forms as required. Attends training classes and follows all <br /> applicable safety rules and provisions. May supervise another mechanic or helper. Completes repair work orders and other <br /> related reports. Furnishes time estimates and parts lists for vehicle and equipment repairs to the respective supervisor and/or <br /> person responsible for ordering parts and materials. Obtains quotations from vendors for parts and repairs on vehicles and 15% <br /> equipment, if necessary to expedite repair work. (1, 2, 3) <br /> 3. Operates various vehicles and equipment in the County fleet, including forklifts, tow trucks, steam cleaners, etc. and any other <br /> equipment necessary to perform employees work.
