I mis-spelled March and
have here corrected it.

24 March 2008

Aloha Mayor Kim, Nelson and Council Members,

Please note that the following statement is meant to supercede and clarify our policy statement dated
June 7, 2006 regarding County of Hawai'i efforts to resolve the solid waste challenge. We request that
this statement be included in the public records.

The Sierra Club, Moku Loa Group has adopted the following as our policy statement: "The Sierra
Club, Moku Loa Group supports the efforts of the Kim administration to resolve the solid waste
management challenge before us. Specifically, MLG favors an integrated approach which includes
the creation of a sort station, taking measures to extend the life of the current landfill in Hilo, and
reducing the volume of material which eventually becomes solid waste through increased
recycling.
Further as concerns waste-to-energy technology, MLG opposes all forms of incineration, since
such technology is environmentally unfriendly in general. A number of promising processes
which are now considered experimental will be viable in the near future. Ron Terry informs us
that incineration is currently the only technology on the table by default, since Wheelabrator's was
the only submission when bids were requested. This being the case, MLG favors implementation
of the other aspects of the integrated solid waste management plan and extending the bidding
time to allow other technologies to emerge as viable."
Please keep in mind that the current landfill will remain usable until at least 2010, and it's life can
be extended by seriously increasing recycling efforts.
Mahalo for your kind attention and your efforts in assisting Hawai'i County to develop and
implement a truly integrated and sustainable solid waste management program.
Mahalo, Comm.
