March 10, 2008 WAIMEA MIDDLE SCHOOL: "A PLACE OF INFINITE POSSIBILITIES" Page 6

WMS Students Attend First National Youth Conference

Building Leadership, Nurturing Dreams!

It was PRICELESS - a trip students will remember all their lives.
For some, it was the first time away from family and home. For
some, the first time off Hawai'i Island. For all, it was a challenge
from the get-go. Students had to apply and undergo rigorous
review and interviews, then, once accepted, had to fulfill
academic, behavior and attendance expectations AND fundralsel
Students will present at
this Wednesday's Whew -the fundraising alone was a huge responsibility for
Council Meetings watch students and families and especially their teachers and advisors.
for them on the public They had to raise about $30,000 to keep the price down so that all
z access channel/ could afford to go. And they succeeded, including asking the
Hawaii County Council - led by Chair Pete Hoffmann - for
kokua.
We thank everyone who helped - from buying snacks and other
fundraising goodies, to those who contributed recyclables and
made other donations. We also thank
the school itself for "hiring" the stu-
dents on several occasions to prepare
and serve family dinners - a great way
to earn funds and also practice leader-
ship and teamwork. _
The conference itself was a blast
- 600 new friends from all over
the country. Students "just went
for It]" And then they visited the campus of U.C. Irvine,
Disneyland and Knotts Berry Farm. And yes, there were
challenging moments - learning to travel on your
own.-keep track of your own possessions... and still have
funl Special thanks to the B.O.O.M. Squad teachers "Mas"
Muromoto, Kara Onaka-Winters, Jamilynn Marsko and
Kainoa Bowman for all the sleepless nights of planning to
make it possible. And Mahalo, familiesl We know this
involved sacrifice. Believe us - they made you proud/
Y
{
' L
r FcG 1 BCOEFG
OCU.EFG i r

X^ t -
