REPORT OF THE
COMMITTEE ON PUBLIC WORKS AND PARKS
DATE: March 18, 1997 RE: COMM. NO. 181
PLACE: Councilroom
TIME: 1:36 p m.
Chairperson and Members
Hawaii County Council
Hilo, Hawaii 96720
Your Committee on Public Works and Parks, to which was referred Communication No. 181,
reports as follows:
Communication No. 181 is a letter from Project Architect James M. McKeague, dated
February 3, 1997, which transmits a sign variance request on behalf of applicant, Ululani
Medical Center. The request is for the purpose of allowing a ground sign not to exceed 32
square feet in a residential district. This would constitute a variance from the 6 square feet
allowed for ground signs in residential districts in Section 3-2ti of the Hawaii County Code.
The sign will be a 30.5 square foot single-sided ground sign upon which the words "Ululani
Medical Center" will be mounted. The numbers "868" will be mounted on either side of these
words. The sign will be located on the grounds of the Medical Center at 868 Ululani Street and

will face Ululani Street.
In Communication No. 181, Mr. McKeague notes that although the Medical Center is located in
an area zoned residential, it was granted a use permit, Use Permit No. 129, by the Planning
Commission to operate a commercial establishment in this zone.
Your Committee considered Communication No. 181 at its March 18, 1997 meeting.

Mr. McKeague attended the meeting on behalf of the applicant.
In addition to the information contained in the applicant's sign variance request,
Your Committee also considered a written statement from Mc Wayne Onomura of the County

of Hawaii's Department of Public Works' Building Division. In his statement, Communication
No. 181.01, Mr. Onomura stated that the Building Division had no objection to increasing the
allowable size of this ground sign from 6 square feet to 32 square feet.
No testimony in opposition to the application was offered.
