The funds will be used to expand the department's student-athlete mentoring program to include education to parents relating to liquor laws and the effects and consequences of underage drinking; to educate merchants on identifying false identification and laws and consequences of sales to minors; to conduct compliance checks on sales to minors; and to develop alcohol education media for use on college campuses. Enclosed is a resolution to authorize the Mayor to enter into an agreement with the State of Hawai'i Department of Defense. Also enclosed is a bill for an ordinance amending the Operating Budget by appropriating the $25,500 to the Underage Drinking Prevention Initiatives account. Since the grant period ends on October 30, 2008, the Department of Liquor Control is requesting a waiver from the Finance Committee and to have the resolution and bill heard at the next Council meeting scheduled for August 13, 2008.
