No. 1410/Bill 354 <br />PLACE: Sheraton Keauhou Bay Resort and Spa <br />78-128 Ehukai Street <br />Kailua-Kona, Hawaii <br />Council Chambers <br />333 Kilauea Avenue, 2"~ Floor <br />Hilo, Hawaii <br />TIME: 10:25 a.m. <br />Council Chair and Members <br />Hawaii County Council <br />Hilo, Hawaii 96720 <br />Your Committee on Public Safety and Parks and Recreation, to which was referred <br />Bi11354, reports as follows: <br />Bill 354, transmitted by Council Member Stacy Higa, via Communication No. 1410, dated <br />August 4, 2008, amends the Parks and Recreation Facility Schedule, Chapter 15, Section 15-68.1, <br />of the Hawaii County Code 1983 (2005 Edition, as amended), relating to naming the horseshoe <br />courts located at Onekahakaha Beach Park "Uncle David K. Canes, Sr. Horseshoe Courts,'' in <br />honor of David K. Calles, Sr. (honoring Mr. Canes' contributions to our County by commemorating <br />his name in.perpetuity). <br />Communication 1410 was accompanied by a petition in support of naming the horseshoe courts in <br />honor of David K. Calles, Sr. The petition contained over 100 wlverified signatures. <br />Committee Member Stacy Higa stated that Mr. Canes is the quintessential horseshoe advocate. <br />His diligent efforts and commitment in promoting the sport have helped it flourish. <br />There was testimony from four members of the public. All spoke in support of Bill 354, lauding <br />Mr. Calles' dedication and devotion to his community and to the sport of horseshoe pitching. <br />Pat Engelhard, Director of the Department of Parks and Recreation stated that she is in favor of <br />Bill 354. <br />Mr. David Calles, Sr. addressed your Committee members. He thanked Mayor Kim, Pat Engelhard, <br />and former Council Chair Stacy Higa for their roles in the naming of the horseshoe courts and for <br />their support of the sport of horseshoe pitching. <br />
