No. 1410/Bill 354 PLACE: Sheraton Keauhou Bay Resort and Spa 78-128 Ehukai Street Kailua-Kona, Hawaii Council Chambers 333 Kilauea Avenue, 2"~ Floor Hilo, Hawaii TIME: 10:25 a.m. Council Chair and Members Hawaii County Council Hilo, Hawaii 96720 Your Committee on Public Safety and Parks and Recreation, to which was referred Bi11354, reports as follows: Bill 354, transmitted by Council Member Stacy Higa, via Communication No. 1410, dated August 4, 2008, amends the Parks and Recreation Facility Schedule, Chapter 15, Section 15-68.1, of the Hawaii County Code 1983 (2005 Edition, as amended), relating to naming the horseshoe courts located at Onekahakaha Beach Park "Uncle David K. Canes, Sr. Horseshoe Courts,'' in honor of David K. Calles, Sr. (honoring Mr. Canes' contributions to our County by commemorating his name in.perpetuity). Communication 1410 was accompanied by a petition in support of naming the horseshoe courts in honor of David K. Calles, Sr. The petition contained over 100 wlverified signatures. Committee Member Stacy Higa stated that Mr. Canes is the quintessential horseshoe advocate. His diligent efforts and commitment in promoting the sport have helped it flourish. There was testimony from four members of the public. All spoke in support of Bill 354, lauding Mr. Calles' dedication and devotion to his community and to the sport of horseshoe pitching. Pat Engelhard, Director of the Department of Parks and Recreation stated that she is in favor of Bill 354. Mr. David Calles, Sr. addressed your Committee members. He thanked Mayor Kim, Pat Engelhard, and former Council Chair Stacy Higa for their roles in the naming of the horseshoe courts and for their support of the sport of horseshoe pitching.
