COUNTY OF HAWAII <br />ORDINANCE NO. <br />STATE OF HAWAII <br />BILL NO. 354 <br />AN ORDINANCE AMENDING THE PARKS AND RECREATION FACILITY <br />SCHEDULE, CHAPTER 15, SECTION 15-68.1, HAWAII COUNTY CODE 1983 (2005 <br />EDITION, AS AMENDED), RELATING TO NAMING THE HORSESHOE COURTS <br />LOCATED AT ONEKAHAKAHA BEACH PARK "UNCLE DAVID K. CALLES, SR. <br />HORSESHOE COURTS" IN HONOR OF DAVID K. CALLES, SR. <br />BE IT ORDAINED BY THE COUNCIL OF THE COUNTY OF HAWAII: <br />SECTION 1. Purpose. David K. Canes, Sr., was born in Keaukaha on March 4, 1927, <br />where he spent his formative yeazs. Waz broke out in 1941, and all the schools were closed <br />leaving Mr. Calles unable to complete his education. In 1945, Mr. Calles joined the United States <br />Army and served overseas in Europe, his tour of duty in France, Germany, and Belgium. After <br />returning from War World II, he entered the American School of Education in California and <br />continued his education, graduating in 1955. <br />Mr. Calles and his family (wife Margaret and eight children) lived in Keaukaha and <br />Pana`ewa. He worked for Young Brothers Ltd. in Hilo for 37 yeazs and is now retired. Outside <br />of work, Mr. Canes gave countless hours of his time to athletics in our communities; for example, <br />he participated in the development of a Body Building.Baz Bell Club in Keaukaha, coached the <br />KCYO Men's Softball team, Women's Volleyball team, and coached youth volleyball and <br />basketball at Kawananakoa Hall. Mr. Calles served as USA Volleyball Commissioner for the <br />Hilo District. Mr. Calles participated and competed with various horseshoe pitching groups in his <br />immediate community and around the island. <br />After the passing of his beloved wife Margaret in April 2000, Mr. Calles became more <br />involved in his passion of pitching horseshoe. He wanted to develop and build a sanctioned <br />National Horseshoe Pitcher's Association (NHPA) and Hawaii State Horseshoe Pitcher's <br />Association Courts. He wanted to bring sanctioned NHPA games to the Hilo azea. Mr. Calles <br />and the Hilo Ohana Horseshoe Pitching Club were able to accomplish this goal on September 12, <br />2002, with the creation of 12 Horseshoe courts at Onekahakaha Beach Park. Mr. Calles, also <br />known as Uncle David, is at those Horseshoe Courts at Onekahakaha Beach Park seven-days-a- <br />week from 9:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. During this time, the courts are open to the public as long as <br />they follow the rules. <br />
