The Red Cross staff and volunteers work very closely with Hawaii County government and
volunteer emergency responders in the community for a seamless response. The Red Cross
has a strong relationship and works hand in hand during disasters with Hawaii's fire, police and
civil defense 24 hours a day, 365 days a year. The Red Cross plays a key role at the
Emergency Operations Center when there is a disaster or hazard threatening the Big Island.
They work with Civil Defense to open and staff evacuation shelters. Ourvolunteers feed
disaster victims and county emergency workers, conduct damage assessments on homes, do
family casework and provide financial assistance to help families get back on their feet after a
disaster.
All Red Cross disaster assistance is free, made possible by voluntary donations of time and
money from the public. County Council funding would ensure that critical Red Cross
preparedness efforts in each county are available should a disaster strike. It's not a matter of
"if" but "when" the next big disaster will occur. The people of Hawaii depend on the Red Cross
to be prepared for and respond not only to everyday disasters, but major disasters.
Our specific request for $26,000 in contingency funding are as follows:
$10,000 from Dominic Yagong (District 1)
$6,000 from Emily Naeole (District 5)
$70,000 from Angei Pilago (District 8)
We request your consideration of this request.
With warm aloha,
W~rx,j(~i~h/
Ks-_
William Wilson
Chapter Chair
Coralie Chun Matayd'shi
Chief Executive Officer
Attachment: IRS 501 c (3) letter
