He stated that <br /> the committee would; be voting at the next meeting. <br /> <br /> The correspondence' dated September 12, 2008, from Bob Jacobson was <br /> filed. <br /> <br /> B. Kauai County Council Resolution No. 2008-42, Draft 1, Resolution <br /> Supporting the Recovery of the Hawaii State Mammal, the Critically <br /> Endangered Endemic Hawaiian Monk Seal, approved on September 10, <br /> 2008 by the Kauai County Council. <br /> <br /> President Rapozo stated that he wants HSAC to consider a resolution that <br /> would assist in the preservation of the monk seal. He called Keiko Bonk <br /> to give a presentation to the executive committee. <br /> <br /> Ms. Keiko Bonk of the Marine Conservation Biology Institute distributed a <br /> packet on the Hawaiian monk seal and summarized the information <br /> contained in it. She explained why the MCBI is lobbying county <br /> governments to support resolutions requesting greater federal funding for <br /> the support of the monk seal. <br /> I <br /> • 1100 monk seals in Hawaii and numbers are decreasing <br /> The monk seal is the most endangered marine mammal in the U.S. <br /> • Main reasons for depleting numbers also impact humans: <br /> o Climate change <br /> o Marine,debris in Northwestern Hawaiian islands <br /> o Disease from alien species <br /> o Over-fishing <br /> o Greater intemal competition <br /> $7 million is needed in addition to current funding <br /> Vice President Jacobson asked for clarification on the age of the species <br /> as compared to the Hawaiian islands. Ms. Bonk responded that the <br /> Hawaiian monk seal is 16 million years old, which is older than Maui and <br /> Hawaii islands. <br /> <br /> Treasurer Pontanilla asked about monk seal education programs for <br /> surfers and windsurfers. Ms. Bonk responded that surfers are a targeted <br /> demographic for education programs by MCBI. She added that another <br /> important group to education is county workers. <br /> <br /> Secretary Garcia requested that Ms. Bonk provide him information on <br /> monk seals pertaining to the City and County of Honolulu in order to write <br /> a council resolution that would include local statistics. Secretary Garcia <br /> asked for clarification if federal funding for monk seal preservation relies <br /> <br /> <br /> 6 <br />
