AN ORDINANCE AMENDING THE PARKS AND RECREATION FACILITY SCHEDULE, CHAPTER 15, SECTION 15-68.1, HAWAII COUNTY CODE 1983 (2005 EDITION, AS AMENDED), RELATING TO NAMING THE HORSESHOE COURTS LOCATED AT ONEKAHAKAHA BEACH PARK "UNCLE DAVID K. CALLES, SR. HORSESHOE COURTS" IN HONOR OF DAVID K. CALLES, SR. BE IT ORDAINED BY THE COUNCIL OF THE COUNTY OF HAWAII: SECTION 1. Purpose. David K. Canes, Sr., was born in Keaukaha on March 4, 1927, where he spent his formative yeazs. Waz broke out in 1941, and all the schools were closed leaving Mr. Canes unable to complete his education. In 1945, Mr. Canes joined the United States Army and served overseas in Europe, his tour of duty in France, Germany, and Belgium. After returning from Waz World II, he entered the American School of Education in California and continued his education, graduating in 1955. Mr. Canes and his family (wife Mazgazet and eight children) lived in Keaukaha and Pana`ewa. He worked for Young Brothers Ltd. in Hilo for 37 years and is now retired. Outside of work, Mr. Canes gave countless hours of his time to athletics in our communities; for example, he participated in the development of a Body Building.Bar Bell Club in Keaukaha, coached the KCYO Men's Softball team, Women's Volleyball team, and coached youth volleyball and basketball at Kawananakoa Hall. Mr. Canes served as USA Volleyball Commissioner for the Hilo District. Mr. Canes participated and competed with vazious horseshoe pitching groups in his immediate community and around the island. After the passing of his beloved wife Margaret in April 2000, Mr. Canes became more involved in his passion of pitching horseshoe. He wanted to develop and build a sanctioned National Horseshoe Pitcher's Association (NHPA) and Hawaii State Horseshoe Pitcher's Association Courts. He wanted to bring sanctioned NHPA games to the Hilo azea. Mr. Canes and the Hilo Ohana Horseshoe Pitching Club were able to accomplish this goal on September 12, 2002, with the creation of 12 Horseshoe courts at Onekahakaha Beach Park. Mr. Canes, also known as Uncle David, is at those Horseshoe Courts at Onekahakaha Beach Park seven-days-a- week from 9:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. During this time, the courts are open to the public as long as they follow the rules.
