<br /> <br /> <br /> <br /> <br /> Hawai'i Fire Department <br /> Water Safety Officer It <br /> Position No. 00-New <br /> Attachment A <br /> <br /> Continuation - Duties of the Position Show % <br /> of time <br /> Duties of the Position: <br /> Patrol: (1),(2),(3),(4) <br /> • Mans lifeguard tower; patrols beach on foot along rocky coastline at assigned beach; 50% <br /> keeps alert of all beach activities and weather conditions; removes hazardous <br /> obstacles from beach when practicable (i.e. broken glass, bottles, refuse, etc.); and <br /> assists in evacuating people in time of emergency. <br /> • Swims and uses rescue board to patrol rough open ocean waters; rescues people <br /> in distress, including team rescues with fire and helicopter rescue units:;. <br /> • Warns people of unsafe beach and ocean conditions (i.e. high surf, strong currents, <br /> tsunami, and other National Weather Service and/or Civil Defense warning signals.) <br /> • Supervises and controls beach activities by ensuring the enforcement of water safety <br /> policies, rules and regulations and applicable laws of County, State, and Federal <br /> governments through the appropriate agencies. <br /> Training: (1), (2), (3), (4) <br /> Participates in in-service training programs to maintain physical condition, learn new 20% <br /> first aid and rescue methods and techniques, learn to use new equipment, etc. <br /> • Maintains a high degree of physical fitness to effectively execute ocean rescues <br /> (runs long distances, swims long distances, paddles rescue board, climbs up and <br /> jumps off shoreline cliffs, etc.) <br /> Rescue: (1),(2),(3),(4) <br /> • Administers first aid, rescue breathing, and cardio-pulmonary resuscitation (CPR) an 15% <br /> renders major first aid in cases requiring emergency medical services: <br /> • Calls for ambulance, police, security, fire helicopter, boat rescue, and back-up <br /> water safety units. <br /> Reports: (1), (2), (4) <br /> • Verbally informs supervisor and Fire Control of all incidents when on duty; reports 10% <br /> when leaving station to rescue a victim(s). <br /> • Prepares and submits written reports (i.e. accident, rescue, first aid, etc.) <br /> • Maintains daily log sheet of beach and station activities. <br /> • Insures that station supplies and equipment are maintained in a constant of <br /> readiness. <br /> Miscellaneous: (2),(4) <br /> • May be periodically assigned to the pools or to relieve Water Safety Officers within 5% <br /> the district. <br /> Gives talks and demonstrations on water safety to community groups. <br /> • Performs other related duties as required. <br />
