<br />. . <br /> <br />- I <br />I <br />I <br />I <br /> <br />. - <br /> <br />COUNTY OF HAWAII 'STATE OF HAWAII <br /> <br />RESOLUTION NO. 11 96 <br /> <br />A RESOLUTION REQUESTING COOPERATION BETWEEN THE COUNTY OF <br />HAWAD, THE STATE OF HAWAD, BISHOP ESTATE/KAMEHAMEHA SCHOOLS, <br />QUEEN LILI'UOKALANI CHILDREN TRUST CENTER, THE OFFICE OF <br />HAWAIIAN AFFAIRS AND THE DEPARTMENT OF HAWAIIAN HOME LANDS TO <br />FINANCE THE PLANNING, DESIGN AND CONSTRUCTION OF A NEW <br />MULTIPURPOSE GYMNASIUM ATKA W ANANAKOA/BUALANI PARK IN <br />KEAUKAHA. <br /> <br />WHEREAS, in early 1946, Kawananakoa Hall was rebuilt as a meeting hall and <br />community center at its present site after being knocked off its foundation by the April 1946 <br />tidal wave; and <br /> <br />WHEREAS, on July 5, 1978, the Keaukaha Association held a general meeting, at the <br />Keaukaha Elementary School Cafeteria, concerning the inadequacy of the present Hall to meet <br />the needs of the community and discussion began for the need to plan and build a new facility; <br />and <br /> <br />WHEREAS, the original Hall still stands today and together with the park services <br />approximately 124,000 people annually for many social and sporting events, yet the Hall is in <br />constant need of repairs and continues to be inadequate for basketball and volleyball games; <br />there is no paved driveway or parking area and the restroom facilities are insufficient for the <br />number of people who may use the Hall and athletic fields simultaneously with the Keaukaha <br />Elementary School children; and <br /> <br />WHEREAS, Kawananakoa Hall is a public facility, on Department of Hawaiian Home <br />Lands, operated by the staff of the County of Hawaii, Department of Parks and Recreation and <br />used not only by the immediate community of Keaukaha, but also by the children of the <br />Keaukaha Elementary School, a State of Hawaii, Department of Education facility, and by the <br />greater Hilo, Puna and Hamakua communities; and <br />
