WHEREAS, in January 1996, a committee formed of members from the community, Department of Education, Queen Lili'uokalani Children Trust Center, the Department of Hawaiian Homes, Councilman Elroy Osorio and the County of Hawaii Department of Parks and Recreation to embark on a venture to cooperatively plan and build a new, multipurpose gymnasium at KawananakoalHualani Park; and WHEREAS, the tremendous need for a new multipurpose facility warrant the necessity for its development for expanded athletic programs, meeting areas for small and large groups, community development of programs to meet individual and group needs, talents, and objectives using Native Hawaiian cultural values as its catalyst to insure the success of future career and educational goals; and WHEREAS, the committee estimates that the cost of planning and constructing this new multipurpose facility will be as follows: 1. 2. Plans & Design Construction $ 250,000.00 2.500.000.00 $2,750,000.00; and Total Funding WHEREAS, the Council of the County of Hawaii believes that it is in the best interest of the children and community of Keaukaha and greater East Hawaii to cooperate with the various governmental and nonprofit organizations to finance the building of a multipurpose gymnasium at KawananakoalHualani Park. NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE COUNCIL OF THE COUNTY OF HAW AD that it requests that the Mayor, through the Department of Parks and Recreation, work cooperatively with the State of Hawaii Department of Education, Bishop EstateIKamehameha Schools, Queen Lili'uokalani Children Trust Center, the Office of Hawaiian Affairs, the Department of Hawaiian Home Lands and the community of Keaukaha to plan, design and construct a new multipurpose gymnasium at KawananakoalHualani Park in Keaukaha.
