<br />-------- --~---------- - -~----------------.- - --------- <br /> <br />. <br /> <br />. <br /> <br />I <br />I <br />I <br />i <br />I <br />I <br /> <br />I <br />I <br />I <br />I <br />i <br />i <br />i <br />i <br />I <br />i <br />I <br />I <br />I <br />1 <br /> <br />COUNTY OF HAWAII <br /> <br />STATE OF HAWAII <br /> <br />RESOLUTION No.--16 97 <br /> <br />APPROVING THE ESTABLISHMENT OF A SISTER-CITY RELATIONSHIP <br />BETWEEN THE COUNTY OF HAWAII AND IKAHO-MACHI, JAPAN. <br /> <br />WHEREAS, the Mayor and the Council of the County of Hawaii <br />have endorsed a Sister-City Program to enhance friendship, <br />goodwill and understanding amongst the global communities, <br />especially with our neighbors in the Pacific Basin areas; and <br /> <br />WHEREAS, since 1987, public officials and citizens from <br />Ikaho-Machi, Japan have made visits to our islands annually <br />every November, and for the past nine years have sent ten <br />students to study at Waiakea Intermediate School upon an agreed <br />homestay program; and <br /> <br />WHEREAS, this unilateral and ambitious undertaking has <br />given impetus to the establishment of a formal bond in the form <br />of a sister-city association to pursue the other potentially, <br />mutual benefits that may evolve from a meaningful sister-city <br />relationship; and <br /> <br />WHEREAS, this resolution will be augmented with written <br />covenants between the mayors of both the County of Hawaii and <br />Ikaho-Machi, to be supported additionally with a signed service <br />agreement between the County of Hawaii and the Hawaii Island <br />Japanese Community Association, <br /> <br />NOW THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE COUNCIL of the County <br />of Hawaii that a Sister-City relationship be established <br />between the County of Hawaii and Ikaho-Machi, Japan; and <br /> <br />BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that upon approval of this <br />resolution, that the aforementioned agreements will be duly <br />signed by all of the proper officials at the next appropriate <br />visitation, <br />
