<br />-- ------------- - --- -----.- ---- --~-~ -- ~ ---. ------- ---- ------ <br /> <br />"'~. <br /> <br />. <br /> <br />. <br /> <br />WHEREAS, Hobart, Tasmania is also recognized as a pioneering force in <br />the fields of hydro-electricity, eco-tourism and wildlife preservation; and <br /> <br />WHEREAS, since 1995, sixth grade students ofWaimea Elementary <br />School on the Island of Hawaii have maintained a "pen pal" relationship with <br />sixth grade students ofWaimea Elementary School in Tasmania to broaden their <br />horizons of learning and to further the cultural interchange on the basis of mutual <br />friendship and amity between Tasmania and the County of Hawaii; and <br /> <br />WHEREAS, the North Hawaii Rotary Club has volunteered to serve as a <br />catalyst in eliciting relations between their Rotary Club and their counterparts in <br />the Sister-City through newsletters, committee reports, newspaper articles and <br />videos; and <br /> <br />WHEREAS, these projects will further stimulate Sister-City exchanges and <br />will ensure that a productive and educational Sister-City relationship between the <br />Island of Tasmania and the County of Hawaii is cultivated; and <br /> <br />WHEREAS, during correspondence between the representatives of both, the <br />officials have expressed enthusiastic support of a Sister-City relationship between <br />Tasmania and the County of Hawaii; and <br /> <br />WHEREAS, the County of Hawaii, Island of Hawaii, would be pleased and <br />honored to be affiliated with the Island of Tasmania as a Sister-City. <br /> <br />NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE COUNCIL OF THE <br />COUNTY OF HAWAII that this Council, on behalf of the people of the County of <br />Hawaii, does hereby extend an invitation to the government and the people of <br />Tasmania to participate with the County of Hawaii as its Sister-City for the <br />purpose of creating greater mutual understanding between the peoples of our two <br />great cities and nations. <br /> <br />BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the mayor of the County of Hawaii and <br />the Premier of Tasmania are hereby requested to take whatever action may be <br />necessary to effectuate this relationship. <br />
