No. 1439/Bill No. 353 Council Chair and Members Hawaii County Council Hilo, Hawaii 96720 Your Committee on Finance, to which was referred Bill No. 353, reports as follows: Bill No. 353, transmitted by Director of Finance William Takaba, via Communication No. 1439, dated August 27, 2008, amends Chapter 18, Article 2, Division 3, Section 18-49, of the Hawaii County Code 1983 (2005 Edition, as amended), relating to public transportation. Following is a description of the proposed amendments relating to taxi meter rates. Increase in taxi meter rates The charge per 1/8 mile of travel, and one minute of waiting time would increase from 30 cents to 40 cents. For example, the first mile of travel at the current rate is $5.40; the proposed rate will be $6.20. Each additional mile of travel at the current rate is $2.40; the proposed rate will be $3.20. In addition, a new section would be added to the ordinance, stating the taxi meter fare schedule may be evaluated on an annual basis to make a determination to either increase or decrease taxi meter rates. Mr. Tom Brown, Director of Mass Transit, informed Your Committee that this measure is a consensus result of the taxi industry from both sides of the island. Council Member Brenda Ford made a friendly amendment to Section 18-49 (a) (2) for consistency purpose, by spelling out the number 40. Council Member K. Angel Pilago requested that a copy of the annual review report be privy to the Council.
