TE' ETA A LEHIIA <br />12-7624 Kitmla Loop <br />Pahoa, Hawaii 96778 <br />telex (808)965-9001 <br />TE 11A'A LEHUA is a balsa hula under the direction of Kumuhula 1Cau'ilani Almeida. The <br />purpose of TE I3A'A LEHUA is to preserve the Hawaiian culture through the teaching of hula <br />and in particular the hula style of `aiha'a The• balsa or school is located in Kikals <br />Keokea,Kalapana, but lessons are taught at the Pahoa Cotnmuniry Cemer and Pahoa T~igb <br />School. Cun~ently, the balsa has seventeen (17) students, ages 4 to 18. Nonrtally most hats u hula <br />charge about $50 per month. We do not charge our students, Because we live in au economically <br />depressed area TE HA'A LET3UA prefers m secure.outside financial support tgtlter than bnrden <br />the families. <br />Like the old Japaaece schools, haumana come to TE HA'A LEHIJA after school to learn and <br />keep their Hawaiian culture. They team about kindaess (aloha), maintenance of a well balanced <br />family (`ohana), importancx of educstion (`imi na'auao) taking care of one's focus and purpose <br />(kuleana), to endue the physical challenges and be steadfast (`onipa'a). Kumuhula I~au'ilani is <br />also a cultural resource at Pahoa High School and Hawaii Academy of Arts & Sciences. <br />We are requesting funds in the amount of $1,000 for materials seeded to make their own hula <br />costuiues. We are scheduling a workshop day in Mme' why t$e ~~~ will learn how to <br />prepare a dye bath and dye material and liumuhutnu (sew) a pa'u/kt7tei.
