Structures and cultural sites that are significant to Puna's history and cultural traditions <br /> are preserved. <br /> <br /> b. Areas of scenic and cultural interest are accessible to the public in a manner that does not <br /> detract from their aesthetic, natural and cultural value. <br /> d. Awareness and appreciation of the host culture is expanded. <br /> e. The native forests of Puna are revered as part of the native culture and are provided with <br /> permanent protection from degradation and loss. <br /> f. Tourism in Puna is compatible with historic and natural resources and not intrusive into <br /> the area's communities. <br /> <br /> 2.1.2 Objectives <br /> a. Create a County entity and adopt a process for identifying historic and cultural sites and <br /> advocating for their preservation and/or restoration within the County's permitting and <br /> approval processes. <br /> b. Adopt appropriate location-specific development standards and design guidelines for <br /> buildings, landscape treatment and public infrastructure for communities designated for <br /> Special Design District status. <br /> <br /> c. Protect cultural sites from destruction by development activity. <br /> d. Adopt "kanaka" building code standards to allow structures utilizing traditional Hawaiian <br /> building design and construction methods. <br /> 2.1.3 Actions <br /> <br /> [a.
