Project Site Description: Honu'apo Estuary is in a rural community, <br />located in the District of Ka'u on the Island Hawaii. It is a significant natural and <br />cultural feature of the County's 225 -acre Honu'apo Park and includes <br />Whittington Beach Park, recently acquired (2005) through the dedicated work of <br />community volunteers, known as Ka 'Ohana 0 Honu'apo. The estuary includes a <br />reef, mudflats, marshland, pond and associated uplands, all of which support a <br />rich diversity of native fish and wildlife. Honu'apo Park is the largest county park <br />and part of one of the longest undeveloped coastlines in the State of Hawaii. <br />g. Project Abstract: The main objective of this project is to develop an integrated <br />habitat restoration plan that will give the County, Ka `Ghana, and partners the <br />justifications and technical information needed to acquire large -scale grants and <br />other resources to implement the plan. In order to accomplish this objective, the <br />County and Ka ' Ohana 0 Honu'apo would contract the services of a habitat <br />biologist with expertise in wetlands habitat restoration planning and <br />management. The biologist would be responsible for developing a restoration <br />team, compiling and analyzing information, coordinating planning activities, and <br />writing the plan. Planning activities proposed for funding here include planning <br />services, baseline surveys, topographic /bathymetric mapping, and GIS mapping <br />of important wetland features and planned restoration tasks. Additional <br />activities covered by other secured and pending funding sources include <br />hydrological /engineering consultation, archaeological surveys, administrative <br />support, and a broader resource management plan for Honu'apo Park.
