Included in the applications are 42 organizations which have received funding through the Nonprofit
Grant process for three years consecutively, 14 applicants who requested increases in their request this
year, 30 programs who requested the same amount as last year, and 17 programs funded in FY 09 -10
who requested less this year. There are 9 new applicants not funded in prior years.
Two organizations were not granted funding this year. Those were the Kona Community Hospital and
their Adopt -a -Room program; and Mala`ai's Culinary Garden of Waimea Middle School. The ad hoc
committee unanimously agreed that this would not be an appropriate use of county funds.
Summary:
The grant amount recommended by the ad hoc does not fully meet the need presented by applicants.
However, in these times of great budget shortfalls and declining donations, all of the applicants
expressed their understanding of the challenges confronting the executive and legislative
branches of government. They are determined to continue providing services to the needs of an ever
increasing population. Your Ad Hoc Committee recommends that we appropriate $1,500,000 to
88 nonprofit organizations reflected in Exhibit "A ".
Thank you for the opportunity to serve as Chairperson for this Committee. Special recognition to Ad
Hoc Committee, Council Members, J Yoshimoto, Dennis "Fresh" Onishi and Guy Enriques and their
staff for contributing to this time consuming effort.
Att: Nonprofit Grant Recommendations
