REQUEST: <br />Enclosed is a resolution authorizing the Mayor to enter into a memorandum of agreement with the State of <br />Hawai'i State Civil Defense to provide funding to Hawai'i County for the purpose of purchasing roadway <br />markers and signs to identify Tsunami Evacuation Zones. <br />Also, please prepare a bill to appropriate these program funds. <br />Additionally, we request that this resolution by -pass the Finance Committee and go directly to Council for <br />approval due to the rapidly approaching end of the 09 -10 Fiscal Year. <br />B. BACKGROUND AND JUSTIFICATION (USE ADDITIONAL SHEETS AS NEEDED): <br />Hawai'i County has a well established system of identifing Tsunami evacuation zones and traffic control <br />points around Hawai'i Island. The effectiveness of this system was demonstrated during the February 2010 <br />Chilean Tsunami Warning. In an effort to improve and maintain this system, the National Oceanic <br />Atmosphereic Administration (NOAA) through State of Hawaii State Civil Defense (SCD) has authorized the <br />funding of $20,000 to Hawai'i County for the purchase of roadway markers and signage to identify Tsunami <br />Evacuation Zones. Specifically, the purchase will include 200 thermoplastic roadway markers, applicators, <br />and adhesive to clearly identify tsunami roadblock locations and 100 tsunami signs to replace worn, stolen, <br />or damaged signs currently deployed. <br />SIGNED: <br />aA cQ > jes\C <br />Department Head <br />DATE: Sfv (c) <br />
