The amendment is as follows: <br /> From: <br /> 3308.73 Federal Grant — Distracted Driving Project General $ 25,278.40 <br /> 010.201.5216.41 Distracted Driving Project General $ 25,278.40 <br /> The State of Hawai`i Department of Transportation - Safe Community Program is providing a <br /> $25,278.40 Distracted Driving Project Grant to the Hawai`i County Police Department. <br /> Distracted Driving, defined by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration as "any <br /> non - driving activity a person engages in that has the potential to distract him or her from the <br /> primary task of driving and increase the risk of crashing," has become a serious problem on our <br /> roadways. <br /> The goal of this project is to reduce the number of drivers using an electronic mobile device <br /> while operating a motor vehicle by adding checkpoints, issuing citations for non - compliance, <br /> conducting a media campaign and/or by sending educational letters to registered vehicle owners <br /> Pursuant to Section 46 -7, Hawai`i Revised Statutes, County Departments must obtain the consent <br /> of the Council to enter into agreements with the federal or state governments respecting action to <br /> be taken pursuant to any of the powers granted by law to furnish, expend and receive any funds <br /> or other assistance in connection with projects being or to be undertaken pursuant to those <br /> powers. <br /> FC Report No. 44 <br />
