Distracted driving, defined by the National Highway Traffic Safety <br /> Administration as "any non - driving activity a person engages in that has the potential to <br /> distract him or her from the primary task of driving and increase the risk of crashing ", has <br /> become a serious problem on our roadways. <br /> The goal of this project is to reduce the number of drivers using an electronic mobile <br /> device while operating a motor vehicle by one (1) percent, from 1.55% as reported in the <br /> Summer 2010 Hawai'i Seat Belt Use Survey, to 0.55% by September 30, 2011. <br /> Enclosed is a resolution to authorize the Mayor to enter into an agreement with the State <br /> of Hawai'i Department of Transportation for this grant. <br /> Also enclosed is a bill for an ordinance amending the Operating Budget by appropriating <br /> this $25,278.40 Distracted Driving Project Grant. <br /> If there are any questions, please do not hesitate to call Nori Ishii of the Hawai'i County <br /> Police Department at 961 -2273. <br /> Nancy Crawford <br /> Director of Finance <br /> Enc. <br /> cc: Police <br /> �"Rf_s.
