Council Member Brenda Ford
April28, 2011
Page 2
4. Is there a State Inspector for carcasses and /or Agricultural Vet for live animals on-
site?
A federal inspector with USDA is on site from time processing starts until it is completely
done and the plant reports to said inspector on a daily basis. The plant is required to
comply with federal regulations and requires a federal inspector, yet the plant is required
to follow State Department of Health guidelines in relation to waste and wastewater, etc.
Veterinarians are brought in from Honolulu if there is a need.
5. Will the Slaughterhouse process other agricultural poultry, livestock besides cattle in
the future?
There is a possibility for sheep; however this slaughterhouse is designed for large
animals. Smaller animals including chicken, hogs, etc. require a completely different
slaughtering process.
We are optimistic that the above should clarify any concerns that you may have had
regarding the Pa'auilo Rendering Plant and Slaughterhouse. We look forward to moving
this project forward in order to support our agricultural industry.
Sincerely,
7a,
RANDALL M. KUROHARA
Director
