them out. Because of their growing habit, they cannot be individually treated with
herbicide. Therefore, they will be removed by hand whenever possible.
Native Plant Propagation and Out - planting:
Native Hawaiian plants are known to be highly variable exhibiting morphological and
physiological variation over very small geographic distances. Therefore in any native
conservation project it is important to collect seeds and seedlings from the immediate
area where they will be planted. Introduction of plant material (including native species)
is discouraged because introduced seedlings will not be adapted to local conditions and
P danger importing .. (C
present the dan er of also im rtin weed seeds and alien animals
. frogs, insects
etc). Fortunately, this property has significant native natural reseeding occurring. In most
cases, native seedlings can be thinned out and spread into areas that are being treated for
weeds.
Harvesting:
No harvest is planned for the forested portion of this property.
Time Frame:
Although invasive species will never be completely eliminated from this or any other
property in Hawai'i, it is believed that eliminating mature weed trees and replacing them
with native vegetation will hinder alien species from adversely impacting native
ecosystems. Invasive alien species are so widely distributed in Hawai'i that even with the
best land management practices, weed eradication is a perpetual activity. The owners of
this property are committed to protecting this land, promoting native vegetation and
limiting invasive alien plant presence for the entire 20 years covered by this dedication
and beyond.
Appendix 2
Page 3
