----- <br /> COUNTY OF HAWAII _ _.: STATE OF HAWAII <br /> .•�r� ►� <br /> RESOLUTION NO. 7 3 11 <br /> A RESOLUTION AUTHORIZING ACCEPTANCE, BY THE COUNTY OF HAWAII <br /> DEPARTMENT OF PUBLIC WORKS, OF SEVEN (7) AUTOMATED EXTERNAL <br /> DEFIBRILLATORS FOR THE WEST HAWAI'I CIVIC CENTER. <br /> WHEREAS, an Automated External Defibrillator ( "AED ") is a computerized medical <br /> device that can check a person's heart rhythm, recognize a rhythm that requires a shock, and <br /> advise a rescuer when a shock is needed; and <br /> WHEREAS, Public Access to Defibrillation ( "PAD ") means making AEDs available in <br /> public and /or private places where large numbers of people gather; and <br /> WHEREAS, on February 5, 2011, Mayor William P. Kenoi's Executive Assistant, <br /> Bobby Command, survived a cardiac episode on Oahu after Chaminade University students <br /> flagged down an ambulance and the Emergency Technicians restarted Bobby Command's heart <br /> using an AED; and <br /> WHEREAS, the February 5, 2011, cardiac episode on Oahu demonstrates the <br /> importance of AEDs in public places, and <br /> WHEREAS, K. Taniguchi, Ltd. would like to donate seven (7) AEDs, to be placed at the <br /> West Hawai`i Civic Center, that will benefit the community with a PAD program; and <br /> WHEREAS, the seven (7) AEDs have a total estimated value of $10,000; and <br /> WHEREAS, Article XIII, Section 13 -12, of the Hawai`i County Charter provides that <br /> the Hawai`i County Council, on behalf of the County of Hawai`i, may accept gifts or donations <br /> of personal property; and <br /> WHEREAS, the County of Hawai`i, Department of Public Works recommends <br /> acceptance of the donation from K. Taniguchi, Ltd. of seven (7) AEDs and that K. Taniguchi, <br /> Ltd. be released from any and all liability that may arise with respect to the donation of the seven <br /> (7) AEDs; now, therefore, <br /> BE IT RESOLVED BY THE COUNCIL OF THE COUNTY OF HAWAII that in <br /> accordance with Article XIII, Section 13 -12, of the Hawai`i County Charter, the Council of the <br /> County of Hawai`i authorizes the County of Hawai`i, Department of Public Works to accept the <br /> donation of seven (7) AEDs for the West Hawai`i Civic Center. <br />
