Corro, Ex- Officio City Councilor, <br /> SK Federation President <br /> ABSENT: <br /> NONE <br /> RESOLUTION NO. 2011-112 <br /> A RESOLUTION APPROVING THE ESTABLISHMENT OF CITY <br /> SISTERHOOD RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN THE COUNTY OF <br /> HAWAI'I, STATE OF HAWAII, USA AND ORMOC CITY, <br /> PHILIPPINES AND ENTER INTO A FORMAL AGREEMENT IN <br /> RELATION THERETO. <br /> WHEREAS, the Mayor of the County of Hawai'i and the Hawai'i County Council have <br /> jointly promoted a Sister City Program to foster friendship and understanding among all the <br /> world, particularly those in the pacific basin; <br /> WHEREAS, the City Sisterhood program benefits the people of the affiliated cities <br /> through exchange of economic development, cultural and educational information of mutual and <br /> common interest to the participating parties; <br /> WHEREAS, currently there is an open exchange communication between the officials of <br /> the County of Hawai'i and Ormoc City discussing the establishment of said City Sisterhood <br /> relationship between these two communities; <br /> WHEREAS, Hawaii and the Philippines have a long historical connection beginning with <br /> the introduction of agricultural workers, known as sakadas, in 1906, and according to the 2005 <br /> American Community Survey, 23.5% of the population of the State of Hawaii is of Filipino <br /> descent; <br /> WHEREAS, Hawaii Island and Ormoc City share many common attributes which <br /> includes geothermal energy the latter being the geothermal powerhouse of the Philippines <br /> producing more or less 650 megawatt of geo- energy; <br />
