Sako <br />Deputy Director <br />The State of Hawai'i Department of Transportation Public Affairs - Safe Community <br />Program is providing Federally derived funds of $25,278.40 for the purpose of supporting <br />the Hawaii County Police Department's Distracted Driving Project. Distracted driving, <br />defined by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration as "any non - driving activity a <br />person engages in that has the potential to distract him or her from the primary task of <br />driving and increase the risk of crashing ", has become a serious problem on our <br />roadways. <br />The goal of this project is to reduce the number of drivers using an electronic mobile <br />device while operating a motor vehicle by one (1) percent, from 1.55% as reported in the <br />Summer 2010 Hawaii Seat Belt Use Survey, to 0.55% by September 30, 2012. <br />Enclosed is a resolution to authorize the Mayor to enter into an agreement with the State <br />of Hawaii Department of Transportation for this grant. <br />Also enclosed is a bill for an ordinance amending the Operating Budget by appropriating <br />this $25,278.40 Distracted Driving Project Grant. <br />If there are any questions, please do not hesitate to call Nori Ishii of the Hawaii County <br />Police Department at 961 -2273. <br />Ll <br />Nancy Crawford <br />Director of Finance <br />Enc. <br /><cc: Police wi'% <br />es. 1c91-11.,1311 H�Lvai`i County is an Equal Opportunity Provider and Employer <br />Comm No. 3 74/ <br />Ref.
